Varanasi is renowned for the evening ceremony on the banks of Ganga at the Dashashwamedh ghat. The ceremony is truly captivating in its grandeur. Two ceremonies happen simultaneously and each is conducted by five priests who chant vedic mantras and offerings to the river goddess ganges and conduct the ceremony each evening in grilling summers to harsh winters. The ceremony is conducted during storms and monsoons too. The ceremony is regarded as one of the two most pious evening ceremonies offered to the holy river, the other being in Haridwar located in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
Thousands flock to witness this ceremony each evening. Large groups of people sit and stand on all three sides of the priests on the ghats. While hundreds of boats with thousands of devotees and tourists stand still in the water and watch the ceremony from the river. The view from these boats is mesmerizing. A trip to the holy city is incomplete without witnessing the ceremony. It is one of the biggest attractions of the city and the reason for a festive environment on the ghats every evening.
The boat tour starts from one of the southern ghats and goes up north before halting at the Dashashwamedh ghat for watching ceremony. The ceremony comprises of various rituals and offerings followed by Ganga aarti. The boat then drops you back to a ghat of your choice or from where you started the tour.
